Dreaming of Playing SGFI Kabaddi Nationals? Here's Everything You Need to Know

Every year, thousands of school kabaddi players compete to earn a place at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) National Championships.

However, many talented players miss out simply because they are unaware of the eligibility rules, selection process, or required documents.

If you're aiming to represent your state in the SGFI Kabaddi National Championship 2026, here's a complete guide.

Who Can Participate?

To participate in SGFI Kabaddi Nationals, a player must:

  • Be a regular student of a recognized school.
  • Be enrolled in an SGFI-recognized education board such as:
    • State Board
    • CBSE
    • ICSE
    • NIOS
  • Be studying as a full-time student.
  • Meet the age criteria for the respective category.

SGFI Age Eligibility for 2026

The age eligibility is calculated as on 31 December 2026.

Under-14 - Class 8
Under-17 - Class 10
Under-19 - Class 12

Important: Students who have already passed Class 12 are not eligible, even if they satisfy the age criteria.

Step-by-Step Selection Process

Representing your state at SGFI Nationals requires progressing through multiple stages.

Step 1: School Team Selection

The journey begins at your school.

Schools conduct internal trials to select their official kabaddi team, which then represents the school in inter-school competitions.

Step 2: Block / Zonal Competitions

Selected school teams compete at the Block or Zonal level.

Top-performing players are identified by officials and may be selected to represent their district.

Step 3: District Championships

District-level tournaments feature stronger competition, as the best players from different schools compete against each other.

Outstanding performances here increase the chances of reaching the next stage.

Step 4: State School Games

Qualified district teams compete in the State School Games organized by the State Directorate of Sports or School Education Department.

Following the tournament, final selection trials are conducted to choose the players who will represent the state at the SGFI Nationals.

Step 5: SGFI National Registration

Once selected, the state officials register the players on the official SGFI portal.

Each player receives an SGFI Unique ID, which is used for identity verification and maintaining official player records.

Documents Required

Before the tournament begins, every team must attend a Scrutiny Meeting, where players are required to produce original documents for verification.

Carry the following documents:

  • Original Aadhaar Card
  • Digital Birth Certificate issued by the Municipal Corporation or Gram Panchayat
  • SGFI Eligibility Certificate signed by the School Principal and the State's Deputy Director of Physical Education
  • Attested marksheets of the previous two academic years

Important: Photocopies or digital copies alone may not be accepted during verification. Always carry the original documents.

Common Reasons for Disqualification

Players should be careful to avoid these common mistakes:

  • Incorrect date of birth records.
  • Missing original documents.
  • Incomplete SGFI eligibility certificate.
  • Not meeting the age or class criteria.
  • Errors during online registration.

Preparing your documents well in advance can help avoid last-minute issues.

Why SGFI Matters

The SGFI National Championships are one of India's biggest school-level sporting events.

Many players who have competed in the Pro Kabaddi League and represented India first gained recognition through SGFI competitions.

For young athletes, performing well at the SGFI Nationals can open doors to state academies, SAI centres, university teams, and national camps.

Final Thoughts

The road to the SGFI Kabaddi National Championship is challenging, but with the right preparation and proper documentation, every school player has the opportunity to compete at the highest school level in India.

If you dream of wearing your state's jersey, start preparing early, participate in your school and district competitions, and ensure all your documents are ready before the selection process begins.
